The ‘Little Giant’ Platform Step
As we are all too aware the elf ‘n’ safety brigade take a rather dim view of the common step ladder and this has led to many a conflict on-site between tradesmen, managers, surveyors and the omnipotent Health & Safety Officer. We have all heard the one about step ladders being illegal (a myth, no doubt, perpetrated by the manufactures of those hideous ‘podium’ contraptions!).
While this can be somewhat of a pain it has to be acknowledged that the humble step ladder has not earned it’s deadly reputation for nothing. Accidents do happen and, often as not, our friend the stepladder is a major culprit.
With this in mind it’s refreshing to see a product which addresses this issue – the Little Giant range of safety steps and ladders are now a familiar sight and have proved very popular with the guys who spend most of their time ‘off the ground’ such as ceiling fixers, sparkies, dry-liners and painters.
The Little Giant is not guaranteed to be accepted for use on site, ultimately it will depend upon your company’s policy. Unfortunately, the relevant legislation – The Work at Height Regulations are rather vague. To comply fully you would have to use a podium with guard rails on four sides but, as we all know, this is a solution which is often so impracticable as to make the job impossible to carry out. In our opinion, the Little Giant, used correctly, offers the best compromise available.
Like all the best kit in the construction game the Little Giant is made in the US (although it originated in Germany) and is now available in the UK at prices which compare favourably to the traditional Class 1 steps and ladders.

The 3 tread Little Giant Safety Steps are a great every-day step ladder solution. With slip-resistant extra-large treads and safety rail they provide excellent stability and safety when working with both hands. Manufactured to EN 14183.

Heavy-duty aluminum ladder with splayed legs and extra-large safety feet. Can be easily adjusted for use as a stair ladder or for use on sloped or uneven surfaces. Manufactured to BS EN 131
